The Road So Far – Hit the Road Jack

It’s been almost 10 months. So, what’s new? Well…

I moved across the country from Michigan to Texas. A bunch of things happened, none of which are terribly important so let’s just say that I needed a change of scenery and the opportunity presented itself. I’ve moved in with my oldest brother and his family in McKinny for now and things are going alright.

I don’t have a job yet but my sister is helping me look when she has free time. I’m actually very much looking to put my artistic skills to use but I have a lot of work to do on my portfolio and demo reel before I can draw reliable income from that. As for paying the bills, I’m still not sure what I’ll be doing but I need to figure it out quick.

I know it’s a bit short but, that’s going to do it for this entry. I’ll write up a Roadside Attractions post with my thoughts on some movies I’ve seen recently later this week. It feels good to be writing again and now that I’m halfway across the country from the friends and family I’ve grown up with for almost thirty years I have good incentive to keep it up.

The Road So Far – On The Road Again

Well hello again. It has been quite the busy couple of months. Let’s dive right in, shall we?

First off, a delivery driver position opened up at the restaurant and I jumped on it like a trampoline. The work is much more my speed and it pays quite well when you consider the tips. Sure there’s a lot of menial work involved when I’m not actually out on a delivery, but it’s worth it to not worry about if bills are going to be paid on time AND to have spending money in my pocket. It’s not a forever job by any means, but it’s the job I need right now.

In other money matters, my appeal hearing with the UIA finally happened and the denial was overturned. That is one ob the biggest reliefs I’ve ever felt. It couldn’t have come at a better time either with car insurance, license renewal, and plate tabs all coming due at once.

After almost five years I finally have a new phone again. My old Droid 2 was a champ but when it starts taking four or five minutes for the phone app to make a call… Anyway, I picked up the phone I’ve had my eye on for a while, the Samsung Galaxy Note 3. I am constantly getting ribbed by my friends for how giant the thing looks in my not so giant hands, but I love it. It has a big, beautiful screen, great battery life, it’s snappy and responsive, the S-pen is pretty damn cool, and 4G is nice. I am quite happy with my choice. Hopefully this one last as long as its predecessor.

I went to a showing of local writer/director Michael McCallum’s latest feature film Buffalo yesterday and, I must say, it is phenomenal. As always, he packed in a lot of local scenery, music, talent, and flavor along with a deeply moving story to make one of my favorite films this year. I recommend you check out Mike’s other work with Rebel Pictures at rebelpictures.net and keep an eye out for Buffalo at a film festival near you.

I may have been absent from blogging for a while, but my social networking didn’t take a break. In fact, just today I got an invite to the new platform Ello, and ad-free network with a very simple and clean esthetic. I haven’t really had much time with it yet to give a solid opinion. You can find out more about it here.

One thing I haven’t been neglecting these past few months is my tabletop RPGs. Wizards of the Coast finally released the fifth edition of Dungeons and Dragons unto the world and it is good. With our friendly local comic/gaming store recently losing its gaming space, my roommate and I have picked up hosting the weekly Encounters sessions. We’ve got a solid group of 6-10 players every week and we always have a blast. In addition to D&D, I’ve been playing in a Sunday evening Pathfinder game in a quite interesting setting of the GM’s design wherein different worlds phase together semi-permanently and our group works as troubleshooters for the claim holders of these discoveries. I am also starting my own Pathfinder campaign tomorrow. Having Kickstarted the Pathfinder Online MMO, I received The Emerald Spire superdungeon which I will be taking a group through on a bi-weekly basis.

More good news. It would seem we have found an appropriate dosage for my anti-depressants. Of course, the way I found out was far from ideal, I ran out. Within a week I could tell a difference in my own mood and energy levels as well as other people’s reactions to me. I’m all set on that front now and hopefully wont be running out again. Now to get some counseling scheduled and get some other health issues looked into.

Next up, I’ve got a bit of a downer to talk about involving a week of high hopes that tumbled off into nothingness. I’ve never had the best of luck in the realm of dating. My lifestyle, jobs, depression, anxiety etc. haven’t really helped me get out there and meet people in appropriate social settings. So, I’ve tried my hand at online dating sites on and off over the years. This usually involves combing through hundreds of profiles to find women who seem genuinely interesting and for whom I fit the bill(of which there are maybe five to ten). Next comes sending well thought out messages with a bit of flirt, mentioning something from their profile, and a question or two to break the ice. A vast majority of the time this is met with exactly zero responses, but every once i a blue moon I’ll get a bite. This time, after a few messages back and forth, we seem to be getting along and start texting. Within a few days we set up a date. The day before she has to cancel due to a family matter. We reschedule for later that week. We exchanged some photos. I complimented her smile. While at work(my phone in the car), I get two messages. First, “I don’t mean to come off like I think you’re shallow, but you still want to meet, right?” Then, forty minutes later, “It’s okay.” As soon as I get out of work I read them and respond that of course I still want to meet. I have not heard from her since.

Pulling back out of that, Ive decided that this year, no bull, I am going to participate in Nanowrimo. I’ve got a solid basis to get going from this time, the story of “Baron” Byron Green and his rise to power from orphan to the owner of the first trans-atlantic railroad.

Speaking of anachronism and fantasy, the new series of Dr Who is off to a great start with Peter Capaldi in the role. I’m digging almost everything about it except the new title theme. The animation on it is great, but some of the audio elements just don’t sit right with me. As for the show itself, I’m really liking the new character Mr. Pink and “Listen” is all of the good things about a Moffat episode. I’ve enjoyed Clara thoroughly but I can’t wait to see *SPOILERS* how they write her out this Christmas. *END SPOILERS*

One last thing before I go as this entry has already stretched beyond a thousand words. Acapella group Pentatonix has released their third EP PTX Vol. 3 and it is good. Especially phenomenal is the cover of Stromae’s “Papaoutai” with Lindsey Stirling adding some strings to the mix. You can see the official video here.

Roadside Attractions – Wish I Was Here

I’ve been a fan of Zach Braff since I saw the first episode of Scrubs back in 2001. Scrubs(pre-Interns) is still my favorite show of all time without question. Garden State was a quirky story that I maybe wasn’t exactly ready for when it released a decade ago, but it got me interested in a whole new musical scene. So when I saw that Zach was planning on making a movie with absolutely no compromise to the Hollywood Machine it was impossible for me not to support the endeavor. I’m happy to report that it totally payed off.

First off, let me tell you that it’s really hard to pin a genre on this film. I suppose it is technically a comedy, but you’re not going to be busting a gut. There’s a good deal of tragedy in there
as death inevitably ends one character’s chapter.
In the end things turn out pretty good for most of the family as they deal with it and are changed by it mostly for the better. The slice of life nature of the film reminds me of why I loved Scrubs so much, the way it rolls out the emotional punches. You never quite get the whole story, how could you in such a short period, but enough bits and pieces get filled in along the way.

I wouldn’t say that it’s the greatest film ever made, but I will say it’s the best I’ve seen in quite some time. It’s messy, it’s complicated, it sends some mixed messages.  It’s exactly what it should be and it’s damn near perfect. I can see why Hollywood wouldn’t have backed it as it was made and I’m quite proud to have been part of the campaign to make it happen in spite of that. I recommend that you go see this movie with your family. I warn you though, there’s a good amount of swearing but it is by no means gratuitous. The film touches on myriad themes mostly centered around family. Religion, acceptance, pride, the daily struggle, depression, pursuing your dreams, coping with loss, finding your way out of a rut and moving on from one stage of your life to the next. It is a portrait of life in this very moment, of 2014, and a reminder to cherish it, because it goes by quicker than you think. So go see this movie. Then tell all of your friends to go out and see it because at least one of them needs this right now.

The Path of Progress – A Breakthrough

I had a major breakthrough today. I’m fairly certain I know what kind of work I actually want to pursue. So I was talking to a friend of mine about this and that and the subject of work came up.

Now let me take a step back here as I am just off of nearly three months being unemployed. Two weeks ago I finally picked up a position as a cook at a restaurant two towns east of where I live through talking with a former coworker. It’s not exactly ideal but it’s much better than nothing. I’m actually doing quite well, I just don’t have the speed they want to see. I like cooking and all, but the constant time crunch and attention splitting in the kitchen is bound to wear me down and out so it’s not a permanent career by any means. It helps make ends meet for now though. Anyway, back to the breakthrough.

So my friend has worked for a while at a dog daycare and recently move up to a position as a veterinary assistant. We were talking about our respective jobs and how I could use a second one to help recover from the debt hole I dug myself into when BAM! like a lightning strike I realize that I really do want to work with animals. I guess it’s been creeping up on me for a while now, since losing Tucker, our old family dog, back in April I guess. I’m always curious about people’s pets and for the most part they pretty much instantly take to me. A couple of days ago I met an adorable pup named Loki and she just melted my heart. I honestly do enjoy spending time with animals and I feel working as a trainer or caretaker or something along those lines is something I could really throw myself into with a passion.

Passion. That’s the thing that’s been missing in pretty much every other career path I’ve gone down and I constantly hear that it’s the one thing you really need. Every job I’ve had to date has been just a means to an end. Work for money to stay off the streets or to simply be doing something halfway productive with my time. But this, this is different. I feel a change in myself just thinking about it. Something stirring up deep down. It’s kind of funny how suddenly it just clicked, like a light switch, and how sure I am that it’s the right way to go. Yes, this is what I want to pursue. Now where to get started?

The Road So Far – Getting Back on Track

Tags

I’ve been sidetracked for a while. Waylaid and dismayed. My priorities in as much of a jumble as my emotions. From trying to pay bills with no regular income, to getting jerked around by the UIA, an inconsistent diet, dealing with depression and anxiety, my roommate going through some rough times as well, missing out on opportunities, making bad choices, spending some time with family, spending some time with friends, spending way too much time alone, getting some help, dropping the ball on important things, having trouble sleeping, getting sick, getting thing A done at the expense of thing B, having hope one moment and crippling self-doubt the next, on a roller-coaster of ups and downs that leaves you right where you started. I might write about some of those things. I definitely wont write about others.

Anyway, things are finally looking like they will work out… sort of. I have a job again. It’s far from ideal but it’s better than nothing. Once I get a better picture of my schedule I’ll be able to get a plan together to get out of the red. With monthly bills clocking in just over $700 I’ve got a long way to go there. I figure that I’m down about $2250 from where I would be if I had just never switched jobs. My last cushion finally gave right before I had the interview and I got hit with multiple overdraft fees. Having a job helps, but I’ll probably need to pick up a second job to get ahead of things.

Enough of that depressing stuff; I’m writing a blog again! That’s surely a positive sign as far as my mental health and overall outlook is concerned. First off, you might notice that I reworked the old Schedule page into a more honest Topics page. Six in-depth blogs a week was a little over-ambitious, I know, but I had to see if I could do it. I knew something like this would happen eventually given my track record with similar projects. I still like the six or so categories that I came up with so they are sticking around, it’s just that now they will flow about more organically and unforced. I’ll post at least a couple of times a week and at least one of those will be a Road So Far, by far the one I am most equipped to write with any regularity. Other than that they will come as I have something that fits the particular category. I will try to get a Story Time up at least every other weekend. Feel free to bug me if I don’t. I need to practice those creative muscles and nothing motivates quite like anxious fans. I’d love to get some feedback and interaction from my ever so dedicated readers

As far as this week is concerned, I’ve got the beginnings of a Story Time in the works involving the back story of one of my RPG characters for our Fate Core game in which I’ve been discovering some interesting things about The Baron’s childhood and family. Quite probably a Path of Progress post is forthcoming with the change in my employment status. And just maybe a Roadside Attractions as I’ve been viewing some interesting material of late. I can honestly say it feels good to be writing again and I hope that I can maintain some regularity for once.

Roadside Attractions – Friendly Distractions

First off, let me apologize for not posting a One Step yesterday. I’ve been a little out of sorts and distracted. I might post up a late one tonight when I get my thoughts together on it. But that’s not what we’re here for today. It’s Friday and that means Entertainment news, and boy has it been a week for some entertainment, from TV, to video games, to tabletop gaming, and , of course, E3! Huge post incoming.

Let’s start with Game of Thrones. After the deliciously gruesome end of The Mountain and the Viper we retreat to the wall for an entire episode for even more bloodshed and tears. Jon Snow really starts to show his leadership abilities in this one. *SPOILERS* The formerly off-screen death of Ygritte happens right in front of Jon for extra gut wrenching effect. Holy Crap, the Scythe! No wonder The Wall has never been breached. And my main man Sam Tarly really mans up. Knowing some things that are coming this next week it’s going to be one hell of a finale and another agonizing wait for season five.

The last couple of weeks I’ve also managed to catch AMC’s newest offering, Halt and Catch Fire. Set in the 1980’s and focusing on the PC boom it’s almost like this show was targeted directly at me and my kind. The show focuses around three people at a software company in Texas’s Silicon Prairie. First we have Gordon Clark(Scoot McNairy), a software engineer and family man with ideas about open architecture. He’s been burned on his ideas before and tends not to take risks, but it seems all he needs is a push in the right direction. That push comes from Joe MacMilan(Lee Pace), a visionary, salesman, mastermind, playboy who has anger issues with a world that fails to see his vision. With eyes on the prize regardless of consequences, Joe, a former employee of IBM, wants to use Gordon’s open architecture ideas and reverse engineer an IBM PC to produce something twice as fast at half the price. When inevitable legal issues arise they hire on a proto-punk programming prodigy, Cameron Howe, played by the gorgeous Mackenzie Davis, to write the BIOS from scratch. The chemistry between these three is phenomenal, as is the supporting cast which includes Gordon’s wife Donna played by Kerry Bishé, who previously starred alongside Scoot in Argo. Seriously, if you haven’t seen Argo yet I highly recommend it. It looks like AMC has another smash hit on their hands if the first two episodes are any indication.

I have yet to see the finale of Cosmos: A SpaceTime Odyssey. My Sundays got wrapped up in other activities for a while and I have some catching up to do. I’m a little young to have caught the original Sagan show having not really broken into my nerdier lifestyle until the millennial turn. What I have seen of it though is a fascinating and remarkable show, a real boon for today’s society. Neil deGrasse Tyson brings just enough of an everyman quality to some complicated topics, breaking them down to a more comprehensible level. Even without having seen all of the episodes I can safely say that I am hoping for a second season.

The Path of Progress – Dust Yourself Off

I read somewhere that ninety percent of jobs in the U.S. are filled via internal promotion or referral. It’s not a stretch to consider that the other ten percent are either jobs that require very specific skills that are not easy to come by or are the sort of job that anyone can do, and thus are inundated with applications, or nobody wants to do on account of low compensation or unfavorable conditions. Cultivating and maintaining a strong professional network is crucial to success in today’s economy.

With that in mind I did some more reaching out today on my job search. For the umpteenth time I had multiple people suggesting one company in particular, the very same company that I had interviewed with back in March and was turned down from. So, I’m giving it another shot. This time I don’t have another offer in the wings going in so I’ll be hungrier for it if I land another interview(also literally hungrier as I haven’t been able to go grocery shopping in a while).

Worth a Thousand Words – No Muse

I sit here at quarter to midnight realizing I’ve let the entire day slip by. There were plenty of things I should have gotten done today but for some reason I couldn’t get my head into the game. Instead I spent an awful lot of time in my own head space contemplating, rationalizing, and vainly attempting to get started on something.

Being creative takes quite a bit of effort, and when you don’t have a spark of inspiration to set you going it can easily be the first thing that you stop putting energy into. I’ve taken that route far too many times in my past and it’s something I need to put an end to.

What strategies do any of you other creative types out there use when you just aren’t feeling the muse but you’ve got a deadline looming?

The Road So Far – Making Strides

So, I went four for six last week on posts. I’ll try for a perfect run this week. Other than blogging I’d say it was a fairly uneventful week though. I did do a bit of volunteer work on Thursday night and Saturday afternoon. The roommates girlfriend was in town for the weekend so I wound up spending a good bit of time solo. Played a bit of Final Fantasy XIV with my brother and some friends too. Not quite sure what I mean to do with these Monday posts yet. I’ll try to have more structure next week. As for the rest of this week, who knows what’s in store for me? E3 is going on so I’m definitely following that. And of course the job hunt continues. Worth a Thousand Words is on the schedule for tomorrow so don’t miss that.

Roadside Attractions – Skin Game

Bear with me here. This is my first time attempting to review something and I know I’m going to get some things wrong, but we’ve all got to start somewhere.

The latest novel in the Dresden Files series released last week, and fifteen books in Jim Butcher keeps coming up with new ways to beat up our beloved broken hero Harry Dresden on every imaginable level. This installment breaks from the typical noir detective format and frames itself as a heist, and it does a fine job of it. Along the way we see an awful lot old familiar faces, some of whom we haven’t seen in years, and some entertaining new ones. Warning, there be *SPOILERS* ahead.

Let me start by saying that I’m no expert on heist stories, but from where I sit this one seems textbook with a few elements in particular that seal the deal. Like any good heist movie(Ronin comes to mind) there is a scene of the assembling of the crew complete with dossier style introductions as they enter the meeting place. Some of them are new to the series while others have history that makes working together a bit less than comfortable. There are subtle discussions and minor gaps that leave the audience in the dark until the flashback reveal showing where someone’s allegiance truly lies. This ties into the foregone conclusion of a back-stab exactly when it was promised. The real icing on the cake though is that the whole thing was a setup, a Con by two of the major players in the series and a new third party to get revenge on the supposed mastermind of the heist.

Returning from a long hiatus we see the Denarian Nicodemus Archleone and his daughter/lieutenant Dierdre. Nick’s goal, to steal an artifact from one of the most secure vaults in this world or the next while taking out the threat of Harry Dresden, either directly or, if Harry were to cross him first, by way of dragging Mab’s name through the mud and having her deal with him. Three other Denarians also make appearances: Tessa, Nicodemos’ wife; Lasciel, whom tried to seduce Dresden but was turned down(not without leaving a mark); and Ursiel, a powerhouse it took all three Knights of the Cross to subdue. With fallen angels in the mix it’s really no surprise that Michael Carpenter gets involved though exactly how is quite awesome if I do say so. Another blast from the past is Anna Valmont, who gets recruited to the crew; though the Churchmouse is understandably wary of working with Nicodemus again. Another returning villain is Binder the summoning expert from Turn Coat. Rounding out the returning cast are some of the usual suspects including Karrin Murphy, Waldo Butters, Mouse the Foo Dog, Charity, Molly, and the rest of the Carpenter clan. Oh, and Harry’s daughter Maggie and the Archangel Uriel.
